Hantavirus-Hit Cruise Ship Reaches Rotterdam for Quarantine and Disinfection
The MV Hondius cruise ship reached Rotterdam after a hantavirus outbreak linked to passengers and crew, with authorities preparing quarantine and disinfection measures.

The MV Hondius, a luxury polar expedition cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak, has reached the Port of Rotterdam for quarantine and disinfection, according to Reuters. Authorities planned to quarantine remaining crew members and disinfect the vessel after confirmed and probable cases were linked to the ship.
The outbreak drew international attention after passengers developed severe respiratory illness. Earlier reporting said the ship had been carrying passengers and crew from more than 20 countries when the illness cluster was first reported to the World Health Organization.
Hantavirus is usually linked to exposure to infected rodents or their droppings, urine, or saliva. Health officials have said the risk to the general public remains low because hantavirus does not spread easily between people. Still, authorities are treating the ship carefully because of the seriousness of the illness and the number of people potentially exposed.
The case has become a test of post-COVID health communication. Officials are trying to keep the public informed without creating panic, while also protecting port workers, crew members, and health staff involved in the response.
The ship’s arrival in Rotterdam marks the next stage of containment: quarantine, cleaning, investigation, and medical monitoring. The priority now is to identify how exposure happened and prevent further cases.
